The $3,000 Problem: Why Plumbers in Canada Are Losing Jobs to Voicemail

Every missed call your plumbing business gets goes somewhere. Missed call text back keeps the lead warm automatically. Here's how it works and what it costs to set up.

Missed call on a phone with automatic text reply sent from a plumbing business

Every week, your plumbing business misses calls.

Most of those calls are leads. And most of those leads call the next plumber on Google.

Here's the maths. Five missed calls a week at a $400 average job value and a 60 percent close rate. You're losing $1,200 a week. Over $60,000 a year because no one picked up the phone.

Missed call text back fixes most of it. It costs less than one job.

How Much Does a Missed Call Cost a Plumber?

One missed call costs a plumbing business between $240 and $1,200 in lost revenue on average.

Here's how to work out your number: average job value multiplied by your close rate equals the cost per missed call.

If your average job is $500 and you close 60 percent of leads, each missed call costs $300. Miss 10 a week and you've lost $3,000. Miss 10 a week for a year and you've lost $156,000.

For emergency work, the number is higher. A burst pipe call at 11pm is worth $600 to $1,200, and whoever responds first gets the job. There's no second place.

What Is Missed Call Text Back?

Missed call text back automatically sends an SMS to anyone who calls your plumbing business and doesn't get through.

Within 30 seconds of a missed call, your phone system sends a text: "Hi, you tried to reach [Business Name]. I'm tied up on a job right now. What's a good time for me to call you back?"

The lead gets a response. You didn't have to stop what you were doing. And the lead is far less likely to call your competitor because they feel like they're already in a conversation with you.

The mechanism is simple. And it works.

Why Emergency Calls Are Different

Standard leads shop around. Emergency leads call the first plumber who responds.

A flooded bathroom at 8pm is not a "get three quotes" situation. Whoever picks up, or responds, first gets the job.

Without missed call text back, your voicemail is a dead end. The lead hears your greeting, doesn't leave a message, and moves to the next number on Google.

With missed call text back, the lead gets a text within 30 seconds. "Hey, I saw you tried to reach me. I'm finishing up a job. What's happening at your place?" You're in the conversation. Your competitor doesn't know the lead exists.

What to Say in Your Automatic Text

The text needs to do three things: acknowledge the call, explain the delay, and invite a response.

Keep it under 160 characters so it sends as a single SMS.

Here's a template for your plumbing business:

"Hi! You tried to reach [Business Name]. I'm on a job right now. I'll call you back shortly. What's a good time for you?"

Three rules for the message:

For emergency services, add a line at the end: "If it's urgent, try [emergency line] and I'll get back to you as fast as possible."

How to Set It Up for Your Plumbing Business in Canada

Missed call text back is a built-in feature of HighLevel, which is the platform behind our Thryvia package.

Setup takes about 10 minutes once your account is configured. You connect your business phone number, write your message, and turn it on.

The Canadian-specific part: you need a Canadian phone number registered for 10DLC. The 10DLC system is how carriers verify your SMS comes from a legitimate business sender. Without registration, your automated texts have a higher chance of being filtered as spam by Canadian carriers.

Most plumbers who set up HighLevel in Canada skip this step and wonder why their texts don't get replies. It's the most common mistake in the setup.

What Missed Call Text Back Doesn't Do

Worth being clear about this.

Missed call text back keeps leads warm. It doesn't close jobs for you.

You still need to call back. You still need to quote competitively. You still need to show up on time.

What it eliminates is the cold-lead problem: the person who called once, you missed it, and they're booked with someone else by the time you ring back two hours later.

For most single-operator plumbing businesses in Canada, the problem costs $1,200 to $3,000 a week. Thryvia costs less than one job.

Thryvia includes missed call text back, automated quote follow-up, and post-job review requests. Set up for your plumbing business in under a week.
